Overview
The hotel had recently upgraded its lobby FF&E—furniture, lighting, and front desk finishes—but the elevator banks still showed:
Original painted metal doors, scuffed from luggage and housekeeping carts
Patchy touch-up paint in slightly different sheens
Wood wall panels that no longer matched the new design palette
Guests moved through these elevator lobbies multiple times a day; they had become a weak link in an otherwise premium guest journey.
The hotel engaged Architectural Fusion Finishes to bring the elevator banks up to the same standard as the rest of the public areas, without taking elevators offline or committing to full cab replacements.
The Challenge
No visible construction zone. As a 5-star property, the hotel wanted zero “under renovation” feeling—no boarded-up doors or noisy daytime work.
Existing doors had to stay. The elevator equipment and doors were in good working order; replacing them would be costly and involve elevator technicians and extended shutdowns.
Design continuity. The new look needed to align with the hotel’s updated design language: dark woods, warm metals, and a minimalist, gallery-like feel.
High traffic, high expectations. Surfaces had to stand up to luggage, daily cleaning, and constant guest use—but still photograph beautifully.
Our Approach & Solution
Design & material alignment
Collaborated with the hotel’s design team to understand the new lobby finishes, lighting temperatures, and overall mood.
Selected a deep, fine-grain wood DI-NOC™ for the wall panels and a complementary rich, matte metallic film for the elevator doors, echoing the final look shown in the image.
Recommended subtle integrated lighting at the floor and ceiling to highlight the new finishes.
Substrate assessment & prep
Inspected existing painted doors and wood panels for chips, scratches, and imperfections.
Lightly sanded and cleaned metal door surfaces to ensure optimal adhesion.
Repaired minor flaws in the wall substrates so the new films would read as smooth, monolithic planes.
Phased, night-time installation
Scheduled all work during overnight windows when guest traffic was lowest.
Worked one elevator bay at a time so the bank always had sufficient cars in service.
Carefully masked surrounding stone flooring and existing fixtures to keep the area spotless.
Precision wrapping & detailing
Applied DI-NOC™ to the wall panels first, creating continuous vertical runs of dark wood-grain surrounding each elevator bay.
Wrapped the elevator doors with the chosen matte finish, aligning vertical lines and panel breaks so the doors felt integrated into the wall, not separate pieces.
Ensured crisp edges, clean reveals, and invisible seams in guest sightlines.
Materials & Methods
3M™ DI-NOC™ Architectural Films
Dark fine wood-grain for full-height wall panels and elevator surrounds
Coordinating matte architectural film for elevator doors and headers
Installation Techniques
Surface prep including cleaning, sanding, and minor patching
Heat forming around door edges and reveals where required
Seam planning to hide joins in shadow lines and panel breaks
Lighting & Finishing Touches
Coordination with the hotel’s lighting designer to ensure downlights and floor wash lighting enhanced the new finishes instead of revealing flaws
Results & Impact
Elevator lobbies that finally match the brand. The refreshed banks now feel like an intentional extension of the lobby design—warm, minimal, and luxurious.
“New build” appearance without replacement. By resurfacing doors and wall panels instead of replacing them, the hotel avoided major capital expense and invasive construction.
No guest disruption. All work was completed in night shifts; guests experienced the transformation as a “sudden upgrade,” not a drawn-out renovation.
Durable, maintainable surfaces. The DI-NOC™ finishes stand up to rolling luggage, daily cleaning, and heavy use while remaining easy to repair or update in the future.
Stronger first impression. The journey from lobby to guestroom now feels cohesive and elevated—supporting the hotel’s positioning and room rate.
